Opera’s #DataDance Tackles High Data Costs for SA Youth

Opera Mini has launched #DataDance, a national campaign addressing data affordability and digital access for South African youth.

Combining dance culture with digital opportunity, the campaign invites users to post their dance routines on TikTok using the #operaminidatadance hashtag for a chance to win up to five years of airtime.

High Data Costs Create Real Challenges for Youth

A recent Opera-commissioned survey reveals that 62% of South Africans aged 16-35 believe internet costs are too high. 86% say affordable access could transform their lives, particularly in education, jobs, and information access.

Key findings:

  • 63% run out of data every other month

  • 31% exhaust data monthly

  • 68% feel frustrated, while 17% stop browsing entirely

How to Join #OperaMiniDataDance

To participate:

  1. Use the custom amapiano track (available on TikTok under “Opera Mini Data Dance”)

  2. Record & upload a dance video with #operaminidatadance

  3. Win airtime prizes:

    • 1st place: 5 years

    • 2nd place: 3 years

    • 3rd place: 6 months

The campaign runs for four weeks starting May 22, 2025.

Opera Mini’s Solution: Data-Saving Technology

The Opera Mini browser helps users save data with:

  • Built-in compression (browse 10x longer)

  • Extreme Data Saving mode (blocks ads, reduces image quality)

  • Free 3GB monthly data for MTN users

Since 2020, Opera has provided millions of free GBs in South Africa. The #DataDance campaign reinforces its mission to make the internet affordable, inclusive, and culturally engaging.
