Ghana to build new city to decongest Accra

ACCRA (CONVERSEER) – Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama has proposed a visionary plan to stimulate economic activity and relieve the growing pressures facing the nation’s capital, Accra.

Speaking during a Thank You tour at Dodowa in the Greater Accra region, President Mahama recognised the need for long-term solutions to urban challenges, which involve the development of a new administrative city that will serve as a complementary hub to Accra.

According to the president, the capital is under immense pressure due to rapid urbanisation, severe traffic congestion, and ageing infrastructure.

The proposed city, which would be developed outside the Greater Accra Region, is intended to host selected government ministries and agencies.

It would be supported by modern infrastructure, including a direct expressway and railway connection to Accra, designed to enhance the efficiency of public services and promote regional development.

Mahama shared this plan during a meeting with the European Union Ambassador and the EU Chamber of Commerce on 28 May 2024.

He emphasised that beyond easing congestion, the project aims to drive economic diversification, improve administrative efficiency, and attract international and domestic investors to new growth corridors in Ghana.
