Huawei unveils flagship Watch 5 with advanced health tracking

Huawei, a leading wearables manufacturer, has launched its new flagship smartwatch, the Huawei Watch 5, at its Fashion Next event in Berlin. The company, having shipped over 180 million wearables in 12 years, touts the Watch 5 as its “smartest” yet, featuring “trailblazing innovations,” sharper insights, smarter design, and enhanced health features.

A standout feature is the TruSense system, capable of tracking over 60 health and fitness metrics across six bodily systems. The Watch 5 is Huawei’s first to incorporate a Distributed Sensor Module with X-Tap technology for more accurate health measurements. Located between the rotating dial and a side button, this sensor allows users to place a fingertip for faster and more comprehensive health insights. Huawei highlighted the fingertip’s dense vascular distribution, thin epidermal layer, and low melanin concentration as ideal for gathering health metrics.

Capabilities include blood oxygen level measurement in approximately 10 seconds and a 24-hour hypertension risk evaluation. Continuous health and fitness tracking via wrist sensors on the watch’s back remains available. Huawei emphasized how its TruSense technology has aided users in identifying conditions like hypertension through long-term monitoring, which might be missed during brief doctor visits. TruSense has received accreditation from multiple medical bodies, including SGS Switzerland for heart rate monitoring.

Beyond health improvements, the Watch 5 introduces new gesture controls like “Double Slide” and “Double Tap” for more intuitive interaction. Despite these advancements, the watch offers up to 4.5 days of battery life in standard mode, extending to 11 days in battery-saving mode.

The design retains the circular AMOLED display of the Watch 4 but with a less raised screen, a 466 × 466 resolution, and 3,000 nits peak brightness, protected by spherical sapphire glass. The Watch 5 now comes in two sizes (42mm and 46mm), each with five colour options. Standard models include a silicone strap, with a more expensive metal band available for the larger variant. Huawei’s proprietary quick-release straps are also retained.

The Huawei Watch 5 will launch on Huawei South Africa’s online store on 2 June 2025, with a starting recommended retail price of R9,999. It will also be available at selected third-party retailers from July. While standard models offer Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, LTE-equipped models may be available in other markets, though their availability in South Africa is currently unclear.
