BENIN CITY (CONVERSEER) — In a touching tribute to the legacy of the late Barrister Kehinde Cletus Idemudia, the Idemudia Ogunbor family hosted a special chess tournament for secondary school students in Benin City, Edo State.

The commemorative event took place at Swift Education Centre and drew participation from 39 students representing five secondary schools.

The competition featured five intense rounds of play, each with a time control of 20 minutes per player. Two tiebreak matches were required to determine the ultimate winners in the boys’ and girls’ categories, showcasing the depth of talent among the young competitors.

In the boys’ category, Divine Akinrogunde emerged victorious after a decisive win over Richy Osaware in a tiebreak match. In the girls’ category, Esther Sonyaolu claimed the top spot, defeating Victoria Oyakhilome in a closely contested final.

Cash prizes of ₦40,000, ₦30,000, ₦20,000, and ₦10,000 were awarded to the top four finishers in both categories. As per chess tradition, the fourth-place prize was shared among multiple students who tied for that position.

Winners and their schools received medals and trophies, while all participants and officials were awarded certificates to recognise their involvement and efforts.

The tournament not only celebrated the memory of Barrister K.C. Idemudia, a former Permanent Secretary in the Edo State civil service, but also promoted critical thinking and discipline among young minds.

A devout Catholic and a revered public servant, Barr. Idemudia was honoured with a royal bead by the late Oba Erediauwa for his role in organising the 1979 coronation ceremony of the late Benin monarch.

The family expressed their hope that the event would inspire academic and personal excellence among students and serve as a meaningful way to keep the values and contributions of Barr. Idemudia alive in the hearts of the community.
