The Spar Mobile MVNO Is Real, And It’s Giving Out Free Mobile Data With In-store Purchases

It seems like just about everyone has an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) these days, but even we were surprised to see that Spar Group was getting into the game. The group has officially launched Spar Mobile, developed in partnership with megsApp, another local MVNO that piggybacks off the MTN network.

While many MVNOs struggle to pick up traction locally, particularly in the early stages of their life, Spar Mobile might just have what it takes to really detract from the hold that other networks like Vodacom, Cell C, and MTN have on this country. How? By handing out free data with qualifying in-store purchases at any Spar around SA.

In this economy?

200MB mobile data PLUS a block of cheese?

That got your attention, didn’t it? But that isn’t Spar Mobile’s only gimmick. Any data you might accrue while under the Spar Mobile umbrella will not expire, ever. That’s a big deal especially in a country like South Africa where data is so constrained, and bigger networks like Vodacom which regularly disappears its customer’s data.

Customers have the choice of picking up a physical Spar Mobile SIM for only R15 from any Spar, Tops at Spar, Spar Express, or SaveMor store. Each SIM is automatically preloaded with R10 worth of airtime and 300MB of mobile data. Of, if you’d rather not show off your weak social skills, an eSIM is also available.

“The Spar Mobile offering is anchored on simplicity, affordability and trustworthiness, giving us a chance to create one-of-a-kind deals for our customers,”  said the group.

Each Spar store is equipped with dedicated sales agents who can help customers get their SIM activated in a matter of minutes, greatly maximising Spar Mobile’s reach. The group, unfortunately, didn’t mention exactly how customers could claim their free data on certain purchases. Perhaps a QR code printed on your till slip?

Customers signing up to Spar Mobile have the choice to port over their current phone number, or pick up an entirely new one. Once registered, customers can check their balances, top up data, and keep an eye on their rewards through the Spar Mobile app (Android, iOS, Huawei App Gallery).

“SPAR is well positioned to run and operate an MVNO,” said Raubenheimer. “We are building the network by offering very competitive pricing that is simple and easy for customers to understand.”
