Niger Schools Have Adequate Religious Teachers – Govt

Niger State commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr Hadiza Asabe Mohammed, has said that all the schools in the state have adequate religion education teachers .

The clarification came on the heels of concerns raised by some Christian youths that there were no Christian Religious Knowledge teachers in some public schools.

Mohammed, however, said the position was different from records on her table, saying that ” the records on my table is different, we have the required teachers for religious education in our schools; both Christian Religious Knowledge and Islamic Knowledge.”

According to her, where there were shortages of teachers, the government would immediately act based on the records, insisting that religious knowledge teachers were not lacking in the schools.

She said the ministry was putting mechanism in place to ensure that only qualified and well trained teachers were employed hence the ministry would henceforth be involved in the recruitment of the teachers before handing over the records to the state Civil service Commission, CSC.

The commissioner said the ministry was engaging in training and retraining of teachers to improve their pedagogical skills for better teaching and learning in the schools.

Dr Mohammed also said that schools with low enrolment of students would be merged for effective delivery of services while disclosing that the facilities in schools have been improved upon with the help of development partners.
