According to an interview Dan gave to the BBC’s Weekend program, the Romanian leader said Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities near the Danube have increasingly posed risks to Romanian territory and citizens.
“We had, over the last two years, probably 20 or 30 drone incidents,” Dan said, noting that earlier incidents involved drones without explosives. He added that a more recent case involved a drone carrying explosives that did not detonate.
“So this became dangerous for Romanian citizens. And when the Russians strike, targeting cities on the other side of the Danube, they have to be sure that they don’t harm Romanian citizens,” Dan said.
According to the BBC interview, Dan described recent Romanian diplomatic actions as a warning to Moscow and said further measures remain possible if similar incidents occur again. He also indicated that expelling Russia’s ambassador from Romania could be considered in the future.
The comments come days after a Russian drone crashed into a residential building in the Romanian city of Galați during a large-scale Russian attack on Ukrainian infrastructure near the Danube. Romanian authorities reported that two people were injured in the incident.
In a separate statement published on X, Dan said a technical investigation had identified the drone involved in the May 29 incident as a Russian-made Geran-2 attack drone. He stated that Romania would not ignore incidents that threaten the safety of its citizens, national security, or state sovereignty.

Romania, a NATO member bordering Ukraine, has repeatedly reported debris from Russian drones falling on its territory since Russia intensified attacks on Ukrainian Danube port infrastructure. According to Dan, Romanian authorities have recorded between 20 and 30 drone-related incidents over the past two years.
Earlier, Romania announced the closure of Russia’s consulate in the city of Constanța and declared the Russian consul there persona non grata following the latest drone-related incident. Romanian authorities have also been working with NATO allies to strengthen airspace protection along the country’s eastern border as Russian attacks near the Danube continue.
