Indo-Pacific Deepens Defense Ties as Concerns Grow Over U.S. and China

Confidence in U.S. alliance remains strong

Despite efforts to diversify security relationships, many Indo-Pacific officials stressed that the United States remains the cornerstone of regional deterrence.

Singapore Defense Minister Chan Chun Sing said countries should pursue flexible partnerships with like-minded nations and create “coalitions of the able and willing” to address emerging security challenges.

Meanwhile, Canada and New Zealand are increasing their involvement in the region.

Canadian Chief of Defense Staff Jennie Carignan said Canadian forces are expanding cooperation with Japan and the Philippines through maritime exercises and cybersecurity initiatives.

New Zealand Defense Minister Chris Penk said Wellington is considering the purchase of Japanese and British naval vessels to replace its aging frigate fleet while exploring deeper cooperation under the long-standing Five Power Defense Arrangements involving Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, and Singapore.

Although concerns persist about Washington’s long-term strategic focus, regional leaders largely rejected suggestions that U.S. commitment has weakened because of conflicts elsewhere.

For the Philippines, Teodoro said confidence in Washington remains intact despite U.S. involvement in the Middle East.

Similarly, Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles described the alliance with the United States as “absolutely fundamental” to Australia’s national security.

As China continues its military modernization and expands its regional influence, Indo-Pacific nations appear increasingly determined to strengthen both their own defence capabilities and a broader network of partnerships designed to preserve regional stability, regardless of future shifts in global power dynamics.
