Somalia: MPs accuse Somali military officers of human rights violations

MPs from both houses of Somalia’s parliament have formally accused senior military and police officials of serious human rights violations.

In an official letter sent to foreign embassies and international representatives, the lawmakers singled out Mahdi Omar Mumin, Commander of the Banadir Regional Police Division, along with other senior officers, for alleged involvement in abuses.

The parliamentarians urged independent investigations into the claims and called on the international community to closely monitor the situation. They emphasized the need for urgent action to hold accountable anyone found responsible for the alleged violations.

Human rights organisations have frequently raised concerns about abuses within Somalia’s security forces, though allegations against high-ranking officials have rarely been publicly endorsed by parliamentarians. The MPs’ letter signals increasing pressure on both Somali authorities and the international community to address these issues.
