A 21-day intensive training workshop for Liberian agriculture officials officially commenced today in Beijing, China, marking a significant step in the nation’s agricultural transformation history.
The program, organized in collaboration with the China National Research Institute of Food and Fermentation Industries Corporation Limited, brings together 52 participants, including 29 staff members from the Ministry of Agriculture.
The initiative is part of ongoing efforts led by Liberia’s Minister of Agriculture, Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah, and his team to modernize the sector, reduce post-harvest losses, and strengthen food security through value addition.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, team lead Jay Doe Welah Jr., Regional Agriculture Coordinator, delivered a special statement on behalf of all participants.
“Post-harvest losses remain one of the greatest challenges facing vegetable farmers and traders,” Welah said. “By focusing on storage, processing, and preservation, this program directly addresses the critical gap between production and market access.”
He emphasized that the training would provide hands-on skills in extending shelf life, reducing waste, improving food safety, and creating value-added products designed to boost incomes and strengthen Liberia’s food systems.
“Each of us has a responsibility to transfer these techniques to our communities, cooperatives, and enterprises so that more farmers and entrepreneurs can benefit,” Welah stated.
The Liberian delegation expressed deep gratitude to the China National Research Institute of Food and Fermentation Industries Corporation Limited for its technical expertise and commitment to international capacity building.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the training will run through mid-June 2026.
