Leaders concerned over destruction of critical Shea trees

Leaders of Otuke district have raised concerns over the high rate of destruction of Shea nut trees by the community. However, community of Greater North and Otuke district in particular will have a ready market for Shea nuts as a multi-million shilling Shea butter factory has been opened in the area. According Ojok Okello, Executive Director, they are supporting over 1,000 smallholder farmers in Otuke with seedlings of Shea nut to improve their livelihoods. Shea nut factory is expected to produce 50,000 metric tons of Shea butter annually for local consumption and export.
