Netflix Debuts Dialogue-only Subtitles Alongside New Season Of You

There are few things quite as hilarious as watching Netflix attempt to describe the sound of a car or something similar through its closed captions. But if you’re tired of all those ambient noises disrupting your reading time, the streamer has introduced new dialogue-only subtitles, premiering alongside the final season of You.

According to Netflix, nearly half of all viewing hours in the US involve watching content with subtitles or closed captions turned on. We’re guessing it’s a similar story elsewhere, too, which makes the decision a relatively simple one for the world’s largest streamer.

Watchers will still have the choice of sticking with the old methods – Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SDH/CC) – or switching to the new, dialogue-only option as of today.

When opening the language and subtitle chooser during an episode, viewers will now be greeted by two subtitle options. English, which shows only the spoken dialogue and English (CC) that’ll keep all the [door slams] and [fire crackles] you’ve become accustomed to.

This isn’t just limited to English users, either, as is typical for the streamer’s new features. Dialogue-only subtitles will be available on all Netflix originals in every language, in addition to the current SDH/CC subtitle offerings. Whether Netflix’s third-party content will also get a buff remains to be seen. Fingers crossed.
