In a bid to boost the morale of Nigerian weightlifters at the ongoing 2025 Africa Weightlifting Championship in Moka, Mauritius, the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, yesterday, made a personal donation of $3,800 to the Nigerian contingent.
Olopade, who joined the weightlifters in Mauritius four days ago to rally support for the team, handed over the money during a meeting with them and their officials, yesterday morning.
“I bring you greetings from our chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko,” Olopade said as he urged the team to aim for gold and stay focused.
“More gold, more money as you win, you get your alert,” he said.Olopade told the team that four Nigerian weightlifters have been shortlisted in the prestigious A Category of the Elite Athletes Programme headed by Olympian Yusuf Ali.
According to Olopade, each weightlifter included in the A Category of the Elite Athletes Programme will receive $20,000 yearly, with an initial $5,000 training grant installment next week. This is part of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Olopade said. “Your welfare remains our top priority.”
The Nigerian team, made up of six athletes (four women and two men), is eyeing the podium at the continental championship, with eyes also on the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, the World Championships, and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
