UK PM Keir Starmer finally addressed the Supreme Court’s ruling on gender, emphasizing , woman is defined as an adult female.

Keir Starmer has finally addressed the significant gender ruling, expressing his support for the Supreme Court’s decision, which he described as providing “much-needed clarity.”

During a visit to promote the government’s pilot program for free school breakfast clubs, the Prime Minister characterized the ruling as a “step forward.” When questioned about his views on whether a trans woman qualifies as a woman, he said that a woman is defined as an adult female.

In an interview with the BBC, Starmer emphasized the importance of the court’s clarification, noting that it offers a clearer framework for those developing guidance on the matter. Despite the pressure for a timely response, Starmer has not yet commented on the death threats directed at women campaigners following the ruling or the vandalism incidents at recent trans rights protests.

Equalities Secretary Bridget Phillipson reiterated the government’s clear support for the ruling and is expected to address Parliament soon.

However, some Labour ministers have privately expressed reservations about fully endorsing its implications.

In leaked messages, Culture Minister Sir Chris Bryant supported criticism of the head of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, Baroness Falkner, for her interpretation of the ruling regarding trans women’s access to women’s facilities and sports.

Home Office Minister Dame Angela Eagle called for organization among party members, while Downing Street confirmed that no disciplinary actions would be taken against ministers, clarifying that they were not seeking to undermine the ‘ruling.’

During an appearance on BBC Breakfast, Phillipson said that the Supreme Court ruling clarified that biological sex is the foundation for establishing single-sex spaces. She mentioned that schools would receive ‘enhanced guidance’ to better support children questioning their gender, underscoring the significance of children’s wellbeing and the need for clear direction for school leaders.

Drawing from her experience managing a women’s refuge, she emphasized the critical need for safe spaces for women who have faced sexual violence, asserting that the legal protection of single-sex spaces is now more defined due to the ruling.

Phillipson expressed that trans women should utilize male restrooms but advocated for businesses to offer suitable facilities, including unisex options.

On BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, she pointed out that many businesses already provide unisex or private cubicle arrangements, reiterating that access to services should be determined by biological sex. She also raised concerns about the availability of hospital spaces, rape crisis centers, and women’s refuges, where safety and long-term accommodation are paramount, welcoming the Supreme Court’s affirmation that such services can be limited based on biological sex.

Tory leader Kemi Badenoch also praised the ruling while denouncing recent protests.

In response to placards featuring death threats against author and activist JK Rowling, Badenoch remarked that the actions of trans activists amounted to criminal incitement rather than legitimate protest. She argued that without law enforcement, equality is ‘ compromised,’ leading to a two-tier justice system, and urged Labour to distance itself from these extremists. Rowling, a former Labour supporter, expressed her astonishment that Badenoch remains the only UK political leader providing unwavering support for women.
