Gauteng Health on high alert for Easter flood emergencies

The department has stationed specialised rescue teams and equipment in high-risk zones

The Gauteng Department of Health has activated a full-scale emergency response plan for the Easter weekend.

It hosted a live water rescue showcase on Friday at Johannesburg’s Zoo Lake.

MEC for Health and Wellness Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko presented specialised rescue equipment as emergency medical services (EMS) and forensic pathology services (FPS) deployed across Gauteng to deal with flood-related incidents and water rescues.

“The Easter period presents unique challenges, but we are prepared to meet them head-on,” the MEC said.

Easter risks prompt large-scale deployment

With persistent rainfall continuing to affect parts of Gauteng, officials have flagged concerns about slippery roads, overflowing rivers and flood-prone areas that may endanger residents.

“Our emergency medical services and forensic pathology teams are on full alert and equipped to respond swiftly to any incident,” said Nkomo-Ralehoko.

The department stationed specialised rescue teams and equipment throughout high-risk zones, including Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, Sedibeng and the West Rand.

This includes the use of 4×4 ambulances, rescue boats, diving gear, mobile command units and advanced water rescue tools.

Plea to religious groups

Nkomo-Ralehoko made a heartfelt appeal to faith-based groups, encouraging them to take precautions when conducting baptisms or spiritual rituals near water bodies.

“When they baptise their people, they must make sure that they protect them and not go to deeper areas in the floods,” she said.

“We are just a phone call away. Use the same emergency number, 112, when experiencing floods. Our trained EMS teams are ready to assist.”

The MEC emphasised that the rescue units consist of highly trained professionals who continue to undergo re-skilling to remain prepared for emergencies.

High traffic and hotspot monitoring

Key highways such as the N1 North, Mabopane Highway (R80), and Klipgat Road are under surveillance due to heavy traffic flow and flood risk.

Recreational areas like Tswaing Crater, Derdepoort Resort, and Roodeplaat Dam, known for Easter activities, are also being closely monitored.

According to the department, EMS readiness is currently at a high confidence level: staff attendance stands at 97%, vehicle and medical supply availability at 95%, and IT systems functionality at 93%.

“Daily monitoring of these resources is being carried out by dedicated management teams to ensure continued functionality throughout the weekend,” it said.

For emergencies, the public is urged to contact 112 or report complaints via SMS to 35023, or by calling the 24-hour line on 0800 203 886.
