DMs on X will reportedly be replaced by XChat

Elon Musk’s ongoing endeavour to completely dismantle Twitter’s former identity appears to be targeting Direct Messages next. Whispers from X employees and independent researchers suggest that the familiar DM tab may soon be phased out, replaced by a new feature reportedly dubbed “XChat.”

The potential change first surfaced through a response from Zach Warunek, a software engineer at X, to a user reporting issues with DM message requests. Warunek stated definitively that the page would be “deleted soon,” clarifying that this meant the entire existing DM tab, not just the requests section, would be removed.

Corroborating this theory, app researcher and web developer Nima Owji reported on X that “XChat” is already in internal use by X employees. Leaked screenshots from another X user offer a glimpse into the potential functionality of XChat, positioning it as a direct competitor to WhatsApp. The purported feature set includes end-to-end encrypted messaging, file sharing capabilities (including PDFs), disappearing messages, unread status toggles, the ability to delete messages for all participants (not just the sender), and voice message functionality expected sometime after the initial launch.

This strategic shift aligns with Musk’s overarching vision of transforming X into a comprehensive “everything app.” Back in February 2025, the X CEO publicly stated his long-term ambition to entirely forgo using a traditional phone number, intending to handle all text-based communication and voice calls exclusively through the X platform.

While an official release date for XChat has not yet been announced, the fact that several X employees are openly discussing the feature on the platform suggests that its public rollout may be imminent, potentially arriving in the coming weeks as the company continues its aggressive rebranding and feature integration strategy.
