A new report from The Verge suggests that OpenAI is developing its own social media network, potentially setting the stage for direct competition with Elon Musk’s X. Details are limited, but an internal prototype reportedly adds a social feed functionality to ChatGPT’s image generation capabilities.

The report leaves open the question of whether this social network will emerge as a separate app or be integrated into the existing ChatGPT application, as the prototype suggests. Notably, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is said to be seeking feedback on the social network from individuals outside the company.
This move could serve a dual purpose for OpenAI: providing a stream of real-time user data for AI model training and diversifying the company’s offerings beyond its current AI tools.
Regardless of its eventual form, this development is almost certain to escalate tensions with Elon Musk. The relationship between Altman and Musk has been fraught, with OpenAI having previously rebuffed Musk’s acquisition attempts, even counter-offering to “buy Twitter” for a significantly lower $9.7 billion – a clear jab at Musk’s overpayment for the platform.

The animosity has recently spilled into legal action, with OpenAI countersuing Musk, accusing him of launching press attacks and malicious campaigns against the company on X. The lawsuit also describes Musk’s initial legal claims as “harassing” and his interest in OpenAI’s assets as a “sham bid.”
Adding further fuel to the fire, OpenAI has released an email from Musk’s time at the company proposing a merger with Tesla. OpenAI claims Musk was involved in discussions about their for-profit transition and sought majority equity, board control, and the CEO role. Musk ultimately left OpenAI in 2018 and went on to establish xAI, which recently acquired X in a convoluted corporate manoeuvre.
