Experts have called for a shift from traditional teaching methods to a more personalized and holistic approach to education, advocating that education should go beyond paper certification.
Speaking at the 2nd matriculation and oath ceremony of Aletheia University, Professor of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development at the University of Ibadan, Prof. Kehinde Thomas, disclosed that the focus should be on developing well-rounded individuals equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in an ever-changing world.
Thomas, who was speaking against the backdrop of “University education beyond paper certification: “Aletheia University model”, said that an ideal education should prioritize critical thinking, problem-solving, and emotional intelligence, alongside academic knowledge.
On the evolution of technology, the professor of Agricultural extension noted that the incorporation of technology would enrich their learning experiences, encourage creativity and exploration as well as preparing them for the challenges of the modern world.
The university don explained that on a global scale, university education plays a crucial role in human development, providing advanced skills required for success in the labour market.
He said that by attending university, individuals can gain expertise to thrive in their chosen careers, acquire skills to make an impact in their community and work, and develop into active members of society who value diversity and contribute to the greater good.
Also speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Amos Onasanya commended the students on their achievements and urged them to prioritise their studies, warning that the university does not compromise on standards.
He emphasised the importance of hard work, discipline, and adherence to school rules and regulations noting that the university also promotes punctuality and celebrates students who demonstrate this virtue.
The Vice-Chancellor explained the university’s plans for growth and development, including the introduction of new programmes and colleges, stressing the need for students to set goals for themselves and strive to achieve them through hard work and dedication.
He urged students to shun social vices and focus on acquiring knowledge, skills, and character that would equip them for future success.
Meanwhile, the founder of Aletheia University, Retired Major General Sansadeen Adebanjo Awosanya urged the students to be mindful of what is going around them.
