Trokkie drives Saints through Clermont

Northampton Saints bruiser Juarno Augustus was one of the stars in a South African cluster that shone from Dublin to Tokyo at the weekend.

Augustus trucked defenders to score a brace of tries with the help of outside centre Burger Odendaal as Northampton Saints beat Clermont 46-24 at Franklin’s Gardens.

Former Sharks loose forward Henco Venter crossed for two tries in Glasgow’s 43-19 win over Leicester Tigers at Scotstoun Stadium. Venter was joined in the starting Warriors pack by lock JP du Preez. Hanro Liebenberg skippered Tigers and scored a late consolation try, while Handre Pollard contributed two conversions for the Premiership side.

Ivan van Zyl captained Saracens and scored a try in a humbling 72-42 defeat in the south of France against Toulon.

For the second consecutive week, Rohan Janse van Rensburg came off the bench and scored a try for Bordeaux, this time contributing to a 43-31 victory against visiting Ulster.

Rhyno Smith was on deck for Benetton in a nail-biting 39-37 away defeat to Castres.

RG Snyman started for Leinster in the 62-0 rout of Harlequins at Croke Park. Irne Herbst and Simon Kerrod were involved from the bench for Quins.

Jean Kleyn and Thaakir Abrahams were part of a Munster side that shocked La Rochelle on the Atlantic Coast in a 25-24 win for the Irish side. Dillyn Leyds was at fullback for La Rochelle and picked up a yellow card in the second half.

The Du Preez brothers, Rob and Jean-Luc featured alongside Ernst van Rhyn and Hyron Andrews for Sale Sharks in a 38-15 reverse at defending champions Toulouse.

Daniel Kasende scored for Ospreys as they beat Welsh rivals Scarlets 36-14 in Swansea. Kasende’s fellow Saffas Evardi Boshoff and Tom Botha were also in the starting lienup for Ospeys, while Marnus van der Merwe and Jarrod Taylor were used as second-half replacements.

Boan Venter came on as a substitute for Edinburgh in the 24-12 victory over the Lions in the Scottish capital on Friday night, and Francois van Wyk and Jaco Coetzee copied the recipe off the Bath bench in a 49-24 win against Pau in France.

Prop Pieter Scholtz rumbled off the wood in Bayonne’s 32-22 home defeat to the Bulls, while Ruan Ackermann scored a crucial try to help Gloucester claim an impressive 24-17 victory at Montpellier.

Johan Mulder started at scrumhalf for Cardiff in their 35-20 defeat against Connacht and Arno Botha skippered Lyon to a 34-21 win over the Sharks.

Tristan Tedder and Lee-Marvin Mazibuko featured for Racing 92 in the 24-18 win over fellow Top 14 side Perpignan that included James Hall at scrumhalf.

Damian de Allende and Lood de Jager (2) combined for three tries as Saitama Wild Knights powered to a commanding 55-17 win over Toyota Verblitz.

Cheslin Kolbe scored a try and kicked four conversions in Suntory Sungoliath’s 60-31 thumping of a Honda Heat outfit reinforced by Franco Mostert, Matthys Basson, Dawid Kellerman and Janko Swanepoel.

Captain Kwagga Smith scored a try to win the bragging rights over compatriots Kurt-Lee Arendse and Friedle Olivier as Shizuoka Blue Revs hammered Mitsubishi Dynaboars 38-8.

Jesse Kriel scored for Yokohama Canon Eagles in their 33-22 win over a Urayasu D-Rocks side that included Lourens Erasmus.

Kubota Spears defeated Black Rams 42-14 with four Saffas in their winning pack, including Malcolm Marx. Marx and Rikus Pretorius each scored for Spears, ably supported by forwards Ruan Botha, David Bulbring, Tyler Paul and Merwe Olivier.

Former Bulls loose forward Willie Potgieter was on the end of a 73-28 drubbing as Kobe Steelers were smelted by Toshiba Brave Lupus.
