A career member of the U.S. Foreign Service, Julianna Kim assumed the duties of Deputy Chief of Mission at U.S. Embassy in Ouagadougou in July 2025. Julianna joined the Department of State in 2003 after 14 years working in non-profit sectors in Chicago and Vietnam. Julianna served most recently as the Chief of the Political, Economic and Commercial Section at the U.S. Mission to Madagascar and the Comoros. Other overseas assignments include Seoul, Bamako, and Ljubljana. Domestic assignments include the Department of State Bureau of Economic Affairs and the National Foreign Affairs Training Center. Julianna holds a B.A. in Behavioral Sciences and an M.A. in Education from the University of Chicago, an MBA from the University of Hawaii, and spent one year at the East-West Center in Honolulu researching leadership in the Asia-Pacific region. She is also an alum of the Department of State’s Economic Studies program. Along with these studies, Jules has studied Slovene, French, Vietnamese, and Korean. Julianna grew up in Chicago and now travels the globe with her mother Sook.
