According to Bulawayo24 News, Zimbabwe is set to launch its second satellite, ZimSat-2, by November 2024 after a minor delay prevented the original launch planned for May 2024. Mr Painos Gweme, the Coordinator of the Zimbabwe National Geospatial and Space Agency (ZINGSA), explained that the delay was due to the primary payload not being ready, which shifted the launch window to November.
The satellite is equipped with advanced sensors and imaging tools to support various applications, including monitoring environmental hazards, mineral prospecting, drought management, and human settlements. In addition, ZINGSA is completing all technical requirements, and the successful pre-launch tests have positioned ZimSat-2 for its optimal launch window later this year.
In 2022, President Mnangagwa announced that Zimbabwe was prepared to launch ZIMSAT-2, aiming to achieve national connectivity. This initiative is expected to make Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and other communication applications integral to national development.
