All-rounders Wessly Madhevere and Brandon Mavuta were cleared by Zimbabwe Cricket on Thursday after serving the remainder of their four-month ban for “recreational drug use”. Along with the prohibition, they were fined 50 percent of their salary as well. ZC’s medical staff was in charge of Madhevere and Mavuta’s recovery, and they were mandated to participate in the high-performance programme.
Following their ban, Zimbabwe Cricket issued a statement announcing that both players had passed the drug test.
“After serving their four-month suspension for drug usage, Wessly Madhevere and Brandon Mavuta, members of the national squad, have been cleared by Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) to resume competitive cricket. After their suspension term ended and passed their drug test,” ZC released a statement confirming that both of them were clean.
ZC Managing Director Givemore Makoni confirmed the end of their ban via a statement.
“Wessly and Brandon have both undergone rehabilitation and passed a drug test to ensure they were clean, so I’m happy to welcome them back to competitive cricket.”
“More notably, the two players accepted their mistakes and have pledged to stay clean and dedicate themselves to their very promising careers as cricketers,” he stated.
Madhevere and Mavuta last presented Zimbabwe in their home series against Ireland in December last year. Additionally, they played in one Logan Cup match each for Mashonaland Eagles and Mid West Rhinos in Zimbabwe’s domestic first-class circuit.
Due to his recreational drug use in January, batter Kevin Kasuza, was also suspended from all cricket activities immediately along with the all-rounders. Regarding his ban, Zimbabwe Cricket has not yet issued an update.
