Operational Updates
Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM):
• As part of the programme for the treatment and prevention of acute malnutrition in Cunene province,
WFP screened 3,097 children aged 6 to 59 months (CU5) and pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls (PBWG). In June, a total of 772 CU5 and PBWG were admitted into the CMAM programme implemented by WFP. To meet the nutritional needs of these beneficiaries, WFP distributed 0.68 metric tons of Ready-to-Use Supplementary Food (RUSF) during this period.
RUSF Distribution
• Due to increasing MAM the provincial health department requested additional support to Moxico,
Cuando Cubango, and Lunda Norte provinces through the WFP distribution of approximately 18 metric tons of RUSF. An estimated 2,998 children under five diagnosed with MAM are expected to be supplemented. Plans are underway to provide health workers in these provinces with training on the management of acute malnutrition and RUSF stock management.
El Niño Drought Response
• As part of the El Niño drought response project funded by the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), WFP prepared data collection tools for monitoring and reporting activities and conducted market and retailer assessments. Through this project, WFP is providing life-saving food assistance and integrated nutrition support to children with acute malnutrition and food-insecure families in Huíla and Cunene provinces. Through WFP’s CMAM programme, 63,000 CU5 will be screened, of which 7,564 are expected to receive nutrition assistance.
WFP also plans to provide food vouchers to around 5,000 food-insecure households in these two provinces.
Refugee Response
• In June 2024, WFP received agriculture equipment to scale up its resilience project for refugees and host communities residing in Lunda Norte province. Supported by the Government of the United Kingdom (UK), this initiative aims to boost agricultural production and productivity and improve the food security and nutrition of target communities.
• From 12 to 14 June, WFP participated in a joint mission with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) to Lunda Norte province. During the mission, the delegation had the opportunity to meet with local authorities, visit the Lóvua refugee settlement, and assess the progress of the resilience activities implemented by WFP and partners. The project has helped to reduce the dependence on humanitarian assistance, promote social cohesion, and empower families to become self-sufficient.
