Operational Updates
Drought Response
• Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM): WFP screened 2,433 children aged 6 to 59 months and 247 pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls (PBWG) in Cunene province. A total of 1,582 children were diagnosed with moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) and admitted into the CMAM programme supported by WFP. Additionally, a total of 73 PBWGs were enrolled in the WFP programme. To address the nutritional requirements of these beneficiaries, WFP distributed 10.3 metric tons of Ready-to-Use Supplementary Food (RUSF).
• RUSF Distribution: A total of 87.7 metric tons of RUSF were distributed in the health facilities in the provinces of Cunene, Benguela, and Cuanza Sul. Approximately 12,794 children aged 6 to 59 months diagnosed with MAM are expected to be supplemented over the next three months. Considering the anticipated increase in MAM cases due to El Niño-induced drought, these supplements will be critical.
Capacity Strengthening – Nutrition
• WFP, in collaboration with World Vision and with support from the World Health Organization and the Brazilian Embassy, held an awareness-raising event in Luanda dedicated to reflecting on the health and nutrition of women and children in Angola, with a performance of ”6º Andar” by the AMAZONAS group. The event provided a valuable opportunity to present the projects focused on maternal and child health and nutrition implemented by WFP in Angola.
Refugee Assistance in Lunda Norte Province
• The refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo residing in the Lóvua refugee settlement in Lunda Norte province continue to rely on WFP’s food assistance to meet their basic food and nutrition needs. A total of 6,107 refugees received food baskets for March and April 2024 containing maize meal, pulses, vegetable oil, and salt. Vulnerability Analysis and Mapping (VAM)
• Post-distribution Monitoring survey (PDM): WFP carried out a PDM exercise of the refugee response covering General Food Distribution (GFD) and ACL in the Lóvua refugee settlement.
• Monitoring findings of the PDM show a decrease in households with adequate food consumption, from 62% in August 2023 to 59% in March 2024. Furthermore, the percentage of households with poor food consumption remains very low at 2%. The average reduced Coping Strategy Index (rCSI) decreased compared to August 2023 from 21.7 to 14.0 in March 2024 due to the increase in rice production from the ACL programme and consistent distribution schedule.
• Assessment: WFP, in collaboration with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), and other partners, carried out a joint mission to Huíla province to assess the food security and nutrition situation. The delegation visited projects implemented by the World Vision and held meetings with the Vice Governor of Huíla, who emphasized the need for proactive UN coordination in the field. In addition, focus group discussions were carried out in the municipalities of Humpata and Chibia.
