Two men have been arrested in Lagos, Nigeria, in connection with a cybercrime operation impacting the National Water Commission, NWC.
The alleged cybercriminals were detained after they attempted to defraud the NWC of over one-million-US dollars.
Their apprehension was spearheaded by the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency, MOCA, in partnership with US Federal Law Enforcement and Nigerian authorities.
In a release on Tuesday, Director of Communications at MOCA, Major Basil Jarrett, says NWC first alerted the agency in August 2023 of a Business Email Compromise that had illegally routed the funds to the criminals.
MOCA says an intensive international cyber investigation was launched with its US Federal Law Enforcement partners.
The investigation resulted in money being frozen and, ultimately, the majority of it being returned.
MOCA says through further international cooperation, a search warrant was executed in Nigeria.
The two individuals were eventually located in Lagos by Nigerian authorities.
According to Major Jarrett, the arrests are a clear indicator of the strength of MOCA’s cyber investigation capabilities and the importance of ongoing collaborations across borders.
The agency is advising members of the public that cyberattacks are a constant threat in the digital age.
