NEW DELHI: Namibian authorities have strongly denounced the actions of tourists who posed naked on the Big Daddy dune, a popular attraction in the Namib desert. The incident has sparked outrage among visitors and local officials, who are calling for strict measures against the offenders, BBC reported.
According to Kenneth Nependa, vice-chairperson of the Federation of Namibian tourism associations, such behavior could attract the wrong type of tourists and tarnish Namibia’s reputation. In a conversation with Namibian Sun news website, he emphasized that the Big Daddy dune is not only a relaxing spot for tourists but also a family-friendly destination.
Romeo Muyunda, spokesperson for the ministry of environment, forestry and tourism, in conversation with a local media described the behavior as “extremely shocking” and a violation of Namibian law. He urged tourists to act responsibly and appealed to Namibians to promptly report any violations of park regulations for immediate action.
“We appeal to that section of tourists to summon the conscience so that they do the right things,” Mr Muyunda added.
The identity of the three male tourists, who were captured stark naked next to their clothes on the sandy dune, remains unknown. By the time authorities received the reports, the tourists had already left the country. Despite some social media users defending the tourists’ actions, the majority of reactions have been critical of their behavior.
The Big Daddy dune, one of the three largest dunes in the vast Namib-Naukluft National Park, is a popular hiking destination for tourists seeking stunning views across the dune crests. The incident has raised concerns about the need for stricter enforcement of park regulations to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
