The shoot-out between police and gunmen in Kingston Wednesday morning in which four men were killed and a police constable injured, started on Orange Street and culminated at the intersection of Charles and King streets, near the Kingston Public Hospital.
The shoot-out occurred sometime after 1:00 am.
Daina Davy reports.
According to reports from the police, a patrol team was in the Orange Street area of the Kingston Central police division when loud explosions sounding like gunfire were heard.
It’s understood that the explosions were from gunmen feuding with each other.
Head of the Kingston Central Police division, Superintendent Beresford Williams says the team went to make checks, but was fired upon.
The shoot-out extended to the intersection of Charles and King streets, near the Kingston Public Hospital.
According to Superintendent Williams the vehicle the men were driving crashed. He says the men alighted from the vehicle and kept firing at the police.
The police seized five firearms from the scene – three pistols and two rifles.
While the Kingston Central police with assistance from Kingston West were combing the area after the shooting, a fourth man was found dead.
Two others escaped.
Superintendent Williams says in in line with standard protocol, health facilities will be alerted to look out for any men with gunshot wounds showing up to seek medical attention.
Meanwhile, Superintendent Williams says information so far indicate that the men were not from the area.
In the meantime, the Independent Commission of Investigations, INDECOM, has launched an investigation into the fatal shooting.
INDECOM, in a release just before midday, noted that their investigative team was still completing enquiries into the running gun battle with the police that left four men dead.
According to INDECOM, they’ve been told by the police that a team was on patrol when they were fired on by a group of men travelling in a motor vehicle and a pursuit ensued which extended across multiple streets.
The men have not been identified at this time.
INDECOM says it was also informed that a police officer from another responding team was injured by another group of men and is being treated.
