Trainer Borris McIntosh has been fined $60,000 by the First Instance Tribunal of the Jamaica Racing Commission after his race horse, Senor Kwanzi, tested positive for a banned substance.
The tribunal’s investigation under Section 25 of the Jamaica Racing Commission Act was completed on May 27.
The probe was triggered by a report from the Racing Chemist indicated the urine sample taken from Senor Kwanzi indicated the presence of guaifenesin, which is in breach of Rule 257 under the Rules of Racing 1997.
The sample was taken following the running of the first race on August 27, 2022. The B sample, analysed by the University of the West Indies Mona Analytical Chemistry Lab confirmed the presence of guaifenesin.
McIntosh, who was represented by President and Vice- President of the United Racehorse Trainers Association, Patrick Smellie and Dale Murphy respectively, accepted the findings of the Racing Chemist and pleaded for leniency.
The tribunal ruled that Trainer Borris McIntosh was responsible for the positive finding returned by the horse Senor Kwanzi and he was fined $60,000. He has 30 days to pay the fine.
The tribunal warned off Groom Javaughn Smith from all racecourses until he makes his appearance before First Instance Tribunal.
And disqualified Senor Kwanzi from the race, pursuant to Rule 207 of the Racing Rules 1977.
