A school board executive, who has weighed in on the matter of the expelled St James High School girl, says the students should be reinstated.
Vice-chair of Greater Portmore High School, Gary Mowatt, says the students’ rights have been breached and natural justice has not been served.
The girls were booted from the school after they were seen kissing in a two-second video that one of them posted to her WhatsApp status.
The incident has revealed a break down in the relationship between the board and the principal.
Board chairman Christopher McCurdy maintains that the girls were not formally expelled as the principal, Joseph Williams, did not follow the prescribed disciplinary process set out in the Education Regulations Act.
He says the decision was not brought before the board.
Meanwhile, Mr Mowatt explains that the disciplinary process should have begun with a hearing with the students’ parents, and were it so decided, should have included suspension before escalating to expulsion.
Mr Mowatt says the school board should decide what actions to take against the principal.
