Saffa quartet in Scotland squad

Four South Africans have been included in Scotland’s squad for the Nations Championship, which includes a Test against the Springboks at Loftus Versfeld.

They are wings Duhan van der Merwe and Kyle Steyn, along with props Pierre Schoeman and Nathan McBeth.

Coach Gregor Townsend has also called up uncapped Glasgow Warriors hookers Gregor Hiddleston and Seb Stephen, while experienced campaigners such as Finn Russell, Sione Tuipulotu and Rory Darge are all included.

Scotland will open their campaign against Argentina in Buenos Aires on 4 July before travelling to South Africa to face the Springboks a week later. They then host Fiji at Murrayfield on 18 July.

Schoeman and McBeth are joined in the front row by Zander Fagerson, Rory Sutherland, D’arcy Rae, Will Hurd and Elliot Millar Mills.

Schoeman is one appearance away from his 50th Scotland cap, while lock Scott Cummings (48 caps) is also poised to reach the milestone.

Tuipulotu returns to lead the side after injury disrupted parts of his season, while Van der Merwe and Steyn provide proven finishing power out wide.

Van der Merwe, Rae and young loose forward Liam McConnell will first feature for the Barbarians against the Boks in Gqeberha on 20 June before linking up with the Scotland squad.
