There is no partisan distribution of fertiliser. That’s the word from the Rural Agricultural Development Authority, RADA.
It comes against the background of an allegation by PNP General Secretary Dr. Dayton Campbell that the ruling JLP is using the fertiliser distribution programme as a vote buying ploy.
Dr Campbell, who is also the PNP Spokesman on Agriculture has pointed to a video which purportedly highlights the offloading of substantial allocations of fertilisers at the private residence of the JLP councillor candidate for the White House division of Eastern Westmoreland, and at the private offices of the member of parliament for Central Westmoreland.
He has called for an audit of the programme.
However, in a sharp response, the RADA claims that there is absolutely no partisan distribution of fertiliser within its operations and recent claims suggesting otherwise are entirely false and misleading.
It went on to state that as is customary with all production incentive programs, including the distribution of fertiliser, allocations are made to various stakeholders, including members of parliament, without any bias towards political affiliations.
According to the RADA, in November 2023, it allocated 100 bags of fertiliser to each rural MP across the political spectrum. This allocation was communicated to all MPs, regardless of their party affiliations, ensuring equal access and treatment for all rural constituencies. It was stressed that it’s imperative to note that MPs are responsible for arranging their own transportation for the fertiliser provided, ensuring logistical independence and accountability.
The RADA is further claiming that this is the third batch of fertiliser being distributed through the same methodology. All previous distributions have been conducted without any controversy, underscoring the efficacy and fairness of established procedures.
Dr Campbell has called for an immediate halt of the programme, but the RADA says it currently opposes halting the program as the commodities are essential, particularly given the decline in production and recent heavy rains. Farmers are eagerly awaiting fertilisers, anticipating a boost in production says the authority.
All stakeholders and the public at large were urged to disregard any mischief regarding the distribution of the fertiliser.
