A suspended police constable who was out on bail on a murder charge has been killed.
Constable Mario Thomas, who was attached to the Constabulary’s Specialised Operations unit, was shot and killed in Manchester.
Nora Gaye Banton reports.
The body of the interdicted police constable was found early Wednesday morning in bushes in Breezy Hill, Manchester.
Constable Thomas was discovered after a police search of the area, due to a reported shooting incident at a local bar.
Preliminary reports are that Thomas was at the bar when an unidentified assailant approached and fired at him. Thomas attempted to flee but was pursued and shot.
Upon arrival at the scene, the police recovered several 9-millimetre spent casings and found a vehicle with what appeared to be bullet holes.
The circumstances leading to Constable Thomas’ death are being investigated by the Major Investigation Division.
Nationwide understands that Constable Thomas was a former member of the intelligence unit of the disbanded Mobile Reserve.
Shortly after transitioning to a new formation, Specialised Operations, he became suspected of involvement in criminal activities within Area 3 which consists of Clarendon, Manchester and St. Elizabeth.
These included an alleged case of murder, robbery, and multiple shootings.
Constable Thomas was later interdicted following his arrest and charge for his involvement in a violent crime spree where his vehicle was used.
It’s understood that additional evidence led to him being charged alongside other criminals.
He was interdicted on September 29, 2020. His suspension was subsequently published in the constabulary’s Force Orders on December 10, 2020.
The motive that led to the death of Constable Thomas is not yet known.
