The police are still trying to piece together the circumstances surrounding the gruesome murder of an 80-year-old grandmother in Bamboo, St. Ann.
The woman, Sylvia Barrett, a farmer and vendor of Spring Garden, was found dead. Her house was also set ablaze on Wednesday.
According to the police, at about 6:15pm, Ms Barrett’s granddaughter, who lives next door, saw fire coming from a section of her grandmother’s house.
She raised an alarm and contacted the fire station.
The police say the granddaughter and other neighbours managed to extinguish the blaze before firefighters arrived to perform cooling-down operations.
The police, who arrived on scene with the firefighters, later went ahead and checked the four-bedroom, concrete dwelling.
Ms. Barrett’s body was discovered in the dining room, lying on her back.
Her hands were tied above her head with an orange-coloured electrical wire.
Her feet were also bound with the same colour wire.
The police say she also had what appeared to be female clothing tied to her hand, over her face, and feet.
The matriarch also had what appeared to be light scratches from the fire on her left thigh, left upper arm, and abdomen.
The police are appealing to anyone who may have information surrounding the incident to call 119 or visit the nearest police station.
