The Opposition People’s National Party, PNP, is demanding an immediate re-evaluation of the country’s crime management strategy in the face of what it says is the failure of the Holness administration to provide a safe environment for Jamaicans.
The call comes from the party’s Spokesman on National Security, Senator Peter Bunting.
Ricardo Brooks reports.
Senator Bunting has taken the leadership of the Holness administration and the JCF to task over what he says is their self congratulatory posture on crime fighting.
Senator Bunting says despite the government’s reliance on States of Emergency as a crime fighting tool, high levels of violence continue to plague the society.
Senator Bunting says the scale and extent of the threat from crime prove the government is out of ideas.
He cited the suspected murders and burial of the Moodie siblings, and Monday’s attack on the Beryllium couriers as evidence that the crime is out of control.
He’s also questioning the operational decisions made by the Police Commissioner, Major General Antony Anderson.
Senator Bunting is calling on Jamaicans to hold the Prime Minister, Security Minister and the Police Chief accountable for what he says are failures in the crime fight.
The Senator says the time has come for comprehensive and nuanced approaches to the country’s crime problem.
