Prime Minister Andrew Holness has labelled the Sandy Gully in the corporate area as an emergency and says the government has plans to do significant work on the structure.
The prime minister was speaking in the House of Representatives on Tuesday.
Nora-Gaye Banton reports.
Prime Minister Holness says he shares the concerns of those who are pleading for work to be done on the Sandy Gully.
The prime minister was responding to St. Andrew Western’s member of parliament, Anthony Hylton, who made an appeal for further work to be done on the arterial drainage structure.
Prime Minister Holness says the National Works Agency will be tasked to work on a comprehensive plan to rectify the issues.
Mr. Holness says a key focus will be to rehabilitate the areas most at risk.
In July, the opposition raised concerns that the deterioration of the Sandy Gully was a serious threat to the lives and properties of residents in the communities of Washington Gardens, Seaview Gardens and Waterhouse.
During a tour of the lower end of the gully, opposition leader Mark Golding noted significant damage to the sturcture’s floor and protective walls.
He noted that the current state was a result of years of neglect and called for urgent repairs.
