Prime Minister Andrew Holness is reiterating his call to young people not to contribute to the spread of misinformation on social media.
The Prime Minister made the call while speaking Friday at the launch of the government’s Youth Summer Employment Programme at William Knibb Memorial High School in Trelawny.
Mahiri Stewart has that story.
Speaking at the Almond Tree Hotel last Saturday, Prime Minister Andrew Holness voiced his concern for the spread of fake and defamatory information on social media.
The Prime Minister noted that young people tend to be the group most susceptible to spreading misinformation.
While addressing beneficiaries of the Youth Summer Employment Programme in Trelawny on Friday, Mr. Holness pointed out that misinformation is one of the many ways in which social media can be used negatively.
The Youth Summer Employment Programme was launched in 2017.
The Government plans to employ 10,000 young people under the Programme this year.
The Prime Minister urged the young people in the audience to utilise social media in a way that benefits the public.
Mr. Holness added that a government fact-checking website has already been launched to tackle the spread of misinformation.
