In an open letter to Education Minister Fayval Williams on Thursday, Opposition Spokesman on Education Damion Crawford has amplified his push for a tangible response to the escalating violence in schools.
Shaloy Smikle tells us more.
Mr. Crawford says despite repeated calls for action and numerous recommendations put forward by the Opposition, there has been a distressing lack of effective response from the government.
He highlights the alarming trend of violence among students and emphasises the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address the root causes.
According to the Opposition Spokesman, various risk factors are contributing to this violence. These include individual, relationship, community, societal, and school-related factors.
Crawford makes a number of recommendations, which he says will have a tangible impact.
They include the establishment of departments of socialisation in all public schools, led by guidance counsellors and staffed by trained form teachers.
Mr. Crawford is also mooting after-school mobile police patrols in school areas.
He says, too, that a rethinking of the role and remuneration of form teachers to incentivize their commitment to student well-being will reap results.
The Opposition Spokesman is urging Minister Williams to prioritise the safety and well-being of students by taking immediate action on the recommendations.
Crawford says it’s imperative that both sides work together in the best interest of students.
