The Trelawny police division says it recently launched a large-scale operation across the division to capture wanted persons, gunmen, gang members, and individuals who are associated with violent crimes.
It’s called Operation Recovery and is in response to an uptick in murders and shootings in the parish since the start of the year.
The police say the surge in violence is due to interpersonal conflicts, most of which emanate from illicit lottery scamming activities.
Operation Recovery will see increased daily police operations across the parish, assisted by members of the Jamaica Defence Force.
The police say this will result in increased police presence along strategic corridors.
The division is urging residents to cooperate with the security forces even as they may encounter some inconvenience during this operation, particularly in public spaces.
Meanwhile, the Trelawny police say Operation Recovery is already reaping success.
It has reportedly resulted in the seizure of illegal weapons and the arrest of a number of persons for various crimes, including murder.
The latest arrest occurred on Wednesday.
A man was nabbed in connection with the seizure of a Browning semi-automatic pistol with twelve 9-millimetre rounds of ammunition.
Two days earlier, Sherman Sterling of Quarrie District in Salt Spring, St. James, was charged with the April 5 murder of Sandria Williams of Albion Road, Montego Bay.
Sterling is also charged with possession of a prohibited weapon and using a prohibited weapon to commit a felony.
A man has also been arrested on reasonable suspicion of breaches of the Law Reform Act.
Two other men were arrested for various crimes; one was arrested for breaches under the Proceeds of Crime Act, and the other was arrested for breaching his condition of bail.
