Within five months, the Hanover Infirmary is expected to have a brand new furnished matron’s quarters valued at $20 million.
Local government and rural development minister Desmond McKenzie said the facility will be constructed at a cost of $15 million and the remaining $5 million on furnishing the home.
Ground was broken by Prime Minister Andrew Holness and McKenzie on Friday. McKenzie said construction will start after crossing the hurdle of procurement and official open by the middle of the year.
McKenzie pointed to the importance of having a matron’s quarters on the property of the infirmary. The previous building, which was in a state of disrepair, was demolished to make way for the new building.
Besides the groundbreaking for the matron’s quarters, a $5 million therapeutic park was also officially opened on the infirmary property on Friday.
Some six parks have been constructed to date at other infirmaries across the island at a similar cost to that of Hanover.
The minister said the new matron’s quarters and park are in line with a new feature the ministry has for the island’s infirmaries.
