Mayor of Morant Bay, in St. Thomas, the PNP’s Hubert Williams, is calling on the government to postpone Tuesday’s opening of the Harbour View to Yallahs leg of the Southern Coastal Highway Project.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness will open that section of the highway on Tuesday at 10:00 am. He made the announcement on social media on Monday.
Writing on X, the prime minister said, “We celebrate the completion of this infrastructure. Let’s pave the way for more efficient travel.”
But Mayor Williams, in a statement on Monday, says the opening is premature and should be postponed until the road improvement project is satisfactorily completed.
Mayor Williams says residents of St. Thomas were promised a complete highway, yet only a small section of the road from Harbour View to Albion is nearing completion.
He claims the JLP government is politically exploiting St. Thomas residents by opening the road before the necessary work to complete the project is done.
Mayor Williams is calling on the Holness government to cease and desist from what he described as tricking the people of St. Thomas and to instead focus its energy on ensuring the highway is completed.
Mayor Williams highlighted that the Portia Simpson Miller administration was responsible for the project’s negotiation and approval in September 2015.
He says he refuses to be associated with the highway’s opening, seeing that it is incomplete for the proper and safe use of the people of St. Thomas.
