A policeman assigned to the Marine Division of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, JCF, was arrested on Thursday as part of a drug bust conducted by the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Branch, CTOC.
The Constabulary Communications Network, CCN, says during the operation, conducted in the St. Elizabeth Division, a grey Toyota Hiace bus with three men aboard was intercepted.
Fourteen knitted bags of compressed vegetable matter resembling ganja and weighing about 500 pounds were found in the vehicle.
Among those arrested was Constable George Junior Powell, who’s assigned to the Port Antonio Marine Division in Portland. The two other men in the vehicle were also arrested.
The police say those two did not have any identification but appear to be Haitian nationals.
Meanwhile, the CCN says the arrest of Constable Powell in what appears to be an organised transaction with criminals from Haiti, underscores the JCF’s relentless pursuit of criminals, regardless of their uniform or position.
In its statement, CCN says no one is above the law.
The statement says there’s no room in the JCF for individuals with criminal intent, who display a willingness to compromise the privileged position they occupy as members of the organisation.
It says the JCF makes no apology for its rigorous internal investigations and is not embarrassed about its efforts to root out criminal behaviour.
CCN says police personnel are defined not by the uniform they wear, but by their actions and adherence to the law.
It says the JCF is proud of the steps taken to rid the organisation of criminal elements and wants its members to feel a sense of pride in these efforts.
