Councillor for the Craighead division in Manchester, Omar Miller.
Councillor for the Craighead division in Manchester, Omar Miller, says some people in the parish have been slow to report lottery scammers to the police because they benefit economically from the criminal activity.
Nora Gaye Banton for Nationwide News.
Councillor Miller was reacting to the murder of five men in the parish over a seven day period in the parish earlier this month. The police say the murders are linked to scamming and interpersonal gang conflicts.
Councillor Miller admits that some business operators benefit from the cash spent by the criminals and as a result may see no short term benefit in reporting them to the police.
Councillor Miller was a guest on Nationwide This Morning on Friday.
He says there’s no shortage of young men in Manchester willing to try their hand at scamming, given the fast cash and flashy lifestyle associated with the crime.
He says the allure of scamming has caused many young men to turn their backs on traditional occupations.
According to Councillor Miller, some young people use their exposure in the business process outsourcing industry to prepare themselves for life as a scammer.
Meanwhile, Councillor Miller says parents have to do more to help curtail the proliferation of scamming and its adverse outcomes.
He says business operators have a similar responsibility.
