KEVIN KENT IS CURRENTLY IN CUSTODY IN KENYA, WHERE POLICE SAY HE ESCAPED TO AFTER HE KILLED MARGARET MITCHELL OF WHITMAN LAST NOVEMBE
A man in custody in Kenya in connection with the death of a Massachusetts woman in 2023 has been indicted by a grand jury on a murder charge. A Suffolk County grand jury on Tuesday returned a murder indictment against Kevin Kangethe, 40, of Lowell for the November 2023 stabbing death of Margaret Mbitu, 31, of Whitman, Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden said. Mbitu’s body was found on Nov. 1 in a car parked at Logan Airport. Investigators determined that Kangethe fled to Kenya after Mbitu’s murder. Kangethe was captured in early February, subsequently escaped from a Kenyan police station, and was recaptured at the home of a family member on Feb. 14. “Suffice it to say, this has been a custody process with many twists and turns,” Hayden said in a statement. “Along with Margaret Mbitu’s family and friends, we are hoping that the extradition process proceeds in a smooth and timely manner. This indictment makes clear that upon his return to Boston Kevin Kangethe will answer in Superior Court for the brutal killing of Maggie Mbitu, a nurse who cared deeply about so many and who was deeply loved by many in return.” Kangethe is currently in a Nairobi prison and is expected to undergo extradition proceedings in a Kenyan court in the coming weeks.
