Several bus drivers at the Jamaica Urban Transit Company, JUTC, Portmore Depot temporarily withdrew their services today following a disagreement with the management at the facility.
The drivers say one of the employees and a member of management were engaged in a heated argument today and the Police were called to remove the employee from the compound.
Our News Centre spoke with some of the drivers who say the management at the facility has been victimizing them for years.
They say the issues at play are somewhat political as there’s a management change when a different political administration takes office.
The drivers agreed to speak with us on condition of anonymity, fearing further victimization.
He says the workers at the Portmore Depot have been struggling to cope under the current management for over a decade.
He says the management uses the staff roster as a weapon against workers, rostering them to work on days and at times they have indicated don’t suit them.
This other worker explained the incident that triggered the temporary industrial action.
The drivers however explained that they’ve returned to work and commuters would not experience much inconvenience getting buses to take them home today.
Managing Director at the JUTC, Paul Abrahams confirmed with our News Centre that the workers withdrew their services earlier today.
But he says following talks they agreed to return to work.
He’s meeting with representatives of the University and Allied Workers Union, which represents the drivers about the issue.
