President of the Jamaica Teacher’s Association, Leighton Johnson, is calling for a national campaign on positive values in light of numerous instances of violence among students that occurred in the past week.
Students of high schools in the corporate area have been engaged in a string of violent incidents since the start of the week.
Mahiri Stewart has that report.
The flare up of violence has reportedly stemmed from an altercation between a male student from Mona High and a male student from Calabar High regarding a female student from The Queen’s School.
On Wednesday, a male student from a prominent high school was stabbed by his peer from another school on Molynes Road in Kingston.
Another incident on Thursday at the Half Way Tree transport centre, that was caught on video, showed students fighting each other in the middle of the terminal.
These incidents led to two schools, Mona High and The Queen’s School, suspending face-to-face classes.
On Friday, an altercation at the gate of the Irwin High School in St. James saw 15-year-old Raniel Plummer, fatally stabbed by his classmate.
The JTA president believes a national campaign should be launched with collaboration from multiple social groups to educate the nation’s students on proper conflict resolution.
The JTA president says these incidents reignite the association’s call for the implementation of character and value-based education in school curricula.
Mr. Johnson wants a multi-ministerial approach to ending violence in schools.
Mr. Johnson says the nations’s children must denounce these violent tendencies.
