The youth arm of the JLP, Young Jamaica, continues to press for Opposition Leader Mark Golding to resign.
The latest call comes amid views expressed by former Prime Minister P.J. Patterson that, while it is currently legal for Commonwealth citizens to sit in the Houses of Parliament, the practice should end when Jamaica cuts ties with the British monarchy.
Mr. Patterson was speaking Wednesday during a reasoning on the recommendations of the Constitutional Reform Committee, CRC, held at the Faculty of Law on the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies.
He says there are certain sensitive positions in government that should only be held by persons with singular Jamaican citizenship.
Mark Golding is a dual British and Jamaican citizen.
Young Jamaica says Mr. Patterson’s views sharply contrast with those expressed by Mr. Golding.
Further, the group says Mr. Patterson’s views represent a growing divide in the PNP over Mr. Golding’s dual citizenship.
Young Jamaica says the Opposition Leader’s advocacy for dual citizens to sit in Parliament appears to be an attempt to craft the rules for his own selfish benefit.
It says Jamaica deserves leaders who are wholly committed to the nation’s advancement and free from divided loyalties.
