A Jamaican man who went missing after attempting to cross over into the United States illegally via Mexico, has been found dead.
The revelation was made at Wednesday’s post cabinet media briefing by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith.
Daina Davy reports.
Minister Johnson Smith says the Jamaican, whose identity has not been revealed, was found dead on the streets of Mexico.
According to Minister Johnson Smith, the Jamaican embassy in Mexico did contact the local department in Mexico responsible for locating missing people, as part of efforts to find the young man.
She says the embassy was told that an autopsy was done, but that the body hadn’t been identified.
Minister Johnson Smith says the government will be assisting the family to have the body brought home.
Minister Johnson Smith has repeatedly warned Jamaicans against using dangerous routes through Central and North America to reach the United States illegally.
She made another appeal Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Minister Johnson Smith says her office is also looking into reports that some Jamaicans have been kidnapped in Mexico, as they look to slip past border controls and into the United States.
Anecdotal evidence suggests that Panama, Mexico and Belize are popular gateway destinations for Jamaicans and others seeking a back door into the USA.
