Director of non-communicable diseases and injuries prevention at the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Dr. Tamu Davidson, says Jamaica is ranked in the top three for cancer deaths in the region.
Dr. Davidson made the revelation on Nationwide at Five on Thursday as she discussed cancer as a public health burden.
She says there are several environmental risk factors that affect premature cancer mortality.
She was speaking at the launch of the Medical Association of Jamaica, MAJ, 2024 symposium, being held under the theme ‘Resilience in Healthcare: A Global Imperative’.
The four-day symposium is being held in association with the Ministry of Health and Wellness. It started on Thursday and will end on Sunday.
And Dr. Davidson, says non-communicable diseases, NCDs, are now a global health emergency. She says more younger people are dying from NCDs in the Caribbean.
Dr. Davidson says NCDs have been the leading cause of deaths in Jamaica for decades.
