A decision to live, work, exist in the public eye is not an easy one, and certainly is not a house built for every individual to choose as a place to reside. It comes with huge responsibility, accountability, expectations and a duty to think outside of your own personal choices.
There are times when privacy is not a luxury to look forward to owning, as the public believes they have a right to invade your personal space. There is a school of thought that any person who is not fully prepared to have their life placed on a public clothes line for the world to view their laundry, should at all cost, avoid the intoxicating incense of living in the public eye.
It is much easier to become a victim of lies, fabrications, distorted truth and scandals, even without being an active participant in any of the activities you might be blamed for or involved. The mere innocent act of standing close to a fight in public, a wardrobe malfunction or a photo being taken without your knowledge can immediately lead to a fan base frenzy.
Speaking of fan bases and the fickle nature of their fanatic focus, never get caught up in the hype of today’s “likes and followers” providing some sort of security blanket for life. The moment you are even remotely considered to be wrong or portrayed in a negative light, the dark side of the desires will come out.
I am taking the time to shed some light on a reality far too many people, especially the youths, influenced by the false sense of self on social media, take as security. They invest their time, attention and psyche into the belief that they are somehow loved unconditionally in a space that changes faster than Texas weather.
It is true that as humans we crave love, affection and some levels of attention, but some people find social media spaces to be a source of power and pleasing effect to their ego.
Imagine the joy of knowing hundreds or thousands of people, especially strangers, commenting on beauty, an outfit, a car, house or just a lifestyle. The opportunity to be celebrated like a celebrity or overnight sensation can carry a drug induced high if not fully understood.
However, it also carries a very negative side effect that can lead to depression, anxiety and a feeling of being threatened, oppressed and harassed. A prime and recent example would be athletes on the world stage with an extensive audience.
When they are doing well and well loved by fans, every win takes them higher, but making one comment that rubs some people the wrong way, can set off an avalanche of everything from dislike to venomous and hateful words. The thing about being in the public eye is that these same strangers who make up the majority of your fan base take their lead and energy from the same source every time.
They feed off each other and run with the crowd, as they also seek to be part of a group going with the tide of the majority. It is almost crazy to understand that many only have an opinion because so many already posted theirs, and of course, they want to go with the crowd.
It takes unusually thick skin, a serious sense and belief in self and an almost guaranteed mindset, oblivious to what other people think of you from one day to the next. The glare of the public eye is not for all to attempt, so try and be as discerning, conscious and avoid oversharing every delicate and intimate detail about yourself.
Remember, if you have decided to make people a part of your entire life while in the public eye, you have also decided your privacy no longer exists. Be careful what you put out, and careful what you let in.
