Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Andrew Swaby, says the welfare of the homeless and senior citizens housed at various shelters across the corporate area, was among the issues discussed at Sunday’s meeting of the Kingston and St. Andrew Disaster Preparedness Committee.
Indigent senior citizens are housed and cared for at the Marie Atkins Shelter, Desmond McKenzie Transitional Facility and the Denham Town Golden Age Home.
Mayor Swaby says the meeting also discussed various actions to be taken to ensure that the municipality is prepared to respond to impacts from the hurricane.
Following the meeting, Mayor Swaby led a tour of some of the city’s most critical coastal drains and gullies.
Last minute work to clear and clean gullies began early on Monday morning.
Meanwhile, Mayor Swaby told journalists on the tour that measures are in place to shelter the homeless in the event of a hurricane.
Mayor Swaby says one key shelter which was shut down during the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic will be reopened.
